Ok, so today was -15 in the centre of Helsinki and it was windy so it was even colder. My bones aren't coping very well. My wrists ache, especially the one I broke a few years ago. It's not very pleasant. Even now typing it feels uncomfortable, I really don't like it.
I was a bit silly today, I didn't realise how cold it'd be and didn't wear anything under my jeans so my legs got really cold. They are kind of stinging now from being in the warm. When I got back from orchestra rehearsal, my friends were hanging out in the lounge room. One of my friends was jumping around; he said he had lots of energy. So I told him to go outside coz that would take a lot of energy. Well anyway about 20 mins later we are both running outside in temperatures colder than -15.
Call me stupid but it was the most amazing experience ever! The wind was blowing to which brought the temperature down and we were running which made the wind chill factor more. Outside was deserted; there was not a single person who was outside except us. The land was like an ice desert. The wind would blow tiny speaks of crystal like snow across the icy ground and it swirled around in circles as we ran past. It was so quiet except for the sound of our shoes crushing the snow on every step. It didn't seem so cold, until the wind blew in our faces and we were running into the wind. The wind would blow right through both layers of my beanies and it felt as thought I didn't have anything on my head. But we kept running. The strange thing is that I didn't get exhausted running; my body was so focused on keeping warm that it didn't bother about getting exhausted by the running. By running my body was able to stay at a reasonable temperature without me getting too cold. Once we'd reached out destination we stood and watched the ducks swimming in the small area of water that wasn't frozen. The sound of the wind made scary sounds as it blew the particles of snow across the dry and frozen land. I felt my legs with my hands and I couldn't feel my hand on my leg. All I could feel was the material of my jeans, it felt as though I didn't have legs and what I was standing of wasn't actually part of me. It was the strangest sensation, to not be able to feel you hands on your own legs. We then jogged back home, this time running with the wind. It was warm and I was able to run with my bare hands. I was able to enjoy being outside in the extreme cold without hurting or feeling uncomfortable. I was so amazing to be in this situation where things could become extremely dangerous but knowing that you are safe and warm.
I am sorry to mum and dad who have to read this. I’m sure the next time we speak the will tell me to be careful and that I shouldn't do things like this. I’m sure they are right, and I'm sure there is a reason that we were the only 2 people doing this crazy adventure, but it was so cool.
